Preventative

Routine Cleanings and Exams

Routine cleanings and exams are essential components of preventative dentistry, focusing on maintaining optimal oral health and preventing dental issues. During a cleaning, a dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. This helps prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease.

The exam, conducted by a dentist, involves a thorough inspection of the teeth, gums, and mouth. Our dentists and hygienists check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other oral health issues. X-rays may be taken to detect hidden problems not visible during the visual examination.

Routine cleanings and exams are typically recommended every six months to maintain good oral health. They are crucial for early detection and treatment of dental problems, helping to prevent more serious issues in the future.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments are a preventative dental procedure that helps to strengthen teeth and prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in many foods and water sources, and it has been shown to strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.

During a fluoride treatment, a concentrated fluoride solution is applied to the teeth. This treatment can help to remineralize areas of the teeth that have been weakened by acid attacks, helping to prevent cavities from forming or progressing.

Fluoride treatments are often recommended for children, as their developing teeth can benefit greatly from the extra protection. However, adults can also benefit from fluoride treatments, especially those who are at a higher risk of developing cavities. Treatment frequency can vary depending on individual risk factors, but it is often recommended every 6 to 12 months.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars) to prevent tooth decay. These teeth often have deep pits and grooves that are difficult to clean effectively with brushing alone, making them more susceptible to decay.

During the sealant application process, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. Then, the sealant material is painted onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth, where it bonds to the enamel and hardens. This creates a protective shield over the tooth surface, preventing bacteria and food particles from settling into the grooves and causing decay.

Dental sealants are typically recommended for children and teenagers, as they are most at risk for developing cavities in their permanent molars. However, adults can also benefit from sealants, especially if they are prone to cavities or have deep grooves in their teeth. Sealants are long-lasting but may need to be reapplied periodically to ensure continued protection.

X-rays

Dental X-rays, also known as radiographs, are images of your teeth that dentists use to evaluate your oral health. They can help dentists detect problems not visible during a regular dental exam, such as cavities, tooth decay, and impacted teeth. X-rays can also show bone loss due to gum disease and help in the planning of orthodontic treatment or dental implants.

There are several types of dental X-rays, including:

1. Bitewing X-rays: These X-rays show the upper and lower back teeth and are used to detect decay between teeth and changes in bone density caused by gum disease.

2. Periapical X-rays: These X-rays focus on one or two teeth at a time and show the entire tooth, from the crown to the root and the surrounding bone. They are used to detect dental issues such as abscesses, cysts, and changes in the root structure.

3. Panoramic X-rays: These X-rays show the entire mouth, including all the teeth in the upper and lower jaws, the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), and the nasal and sinus areas. They are used to evaluate impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, and jaw disorders.

4. Cone Beam CT (CBCT): This type of X-ray provides a 3D view of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. It is often used for more complex procedures such as dental implants, orthodontics, and oral surgery.

Dental X-rays are safe, and the amount of radiation exposure is minimal, especially with digital X-ray technology. Your dentist will consider your oral health needs and risk factors before recommending the type and frequency of X-rays you need.

Night Guards

Nightguards are custom-made oral appliances designed to protect your teeth from the effects of bruxism (teeth grinding) during sleep. Our nightguards are comfortable to wear and can help prevent damage to your teeth caused by grinding, ensuring a healthy smile for years to come.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer screenings are examinations performed by dentists or healthcare professionals to detect signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth. These screenings are important for early detection and treatment, which can significantly improve the prognosis for oral cancer patients.

During an oral cancer screening, the dentist will visually inspect the mouth, including the lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, and throat, for any abnormalities such as sores, lumps, or changes in color or texture. They may also use special tools or techniques, such as a light or dye, to aid in the examination.

Risk factors for oral cancer include tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, sun exposure (for lip cancer), and certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Regular screenings are especially important for individuals with these risk factors, as well as those with a family history of oral cancer.

Early detection of oral cancer can lead to more successful treatment outcomes. Therefore, it is recommended that everyone undergo regular oral cancer screenings, especially during routine dental check-ups.
